The wines of the South of France include the vineyards of the Pays d'Oc, Roussillon and Languedoc. It is the leading wine region in France in terms of surface area and production volume. The richness of its biodiversity is undoubtedly linked to the climate of its territory. Known as one of the windiest regions, Occitania enjoys four types of wind.
The mistral is a cold and dry regional wind that blows in gusts during the day. It generally follows the passage of a cold rainy day.
The tramontana has similarities with the mistral, it is a violent and cold wind that can appear in all seasons.
The marine blows over the entire Mediterranean coastal area and generally brings heavy rainfall.
L'autan is a fair-weather wind that is associated with mild weather conditions or, conversely, heralds stormy episodes.
But why is the wind so beneficial to the vines of southern France?
We know all about sunshine, which is the most important factor in the ripening of grapes. But what is the role of the wind for the vine? The wind is a regulating element that will protect the vine from certain diseases. It is a real bulwark because it renews the air masses and modifies the temperature but also the humidity that can surround the vines. Indeed, the mistral and tramontana tend to dry out and ventilate the vines. They help to limit the germination of fungi and favour the dispersion of insects. Moist winds, such as the sea wind or the autan, will help the ripening of the grapes.
